Summit Christian Academy is a non-profit ministry of The Assembly of God Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Position Summary

The School Nurse supports the health, safety, and well-being of students at Summit Christian Academy by providing basic nursing care, responding to student illness and injury, maintaining student health records, administering approved medications and treatments, and communicating with parents, staff, and school leadership regarding student health needs.

The School Nurse serves as a key health resource for the school community and helps promote a safe and healthy learning environment. This position works closely with school administrators, office staff, teachers, parents, healthcare providers, and other school nurses across all divisions of Summit Christian Academy and Summit Early Learning Center, as appropriate, to support students with routine health needs, chronic medical conditions, emergency care needs, and health-related accommodations.

This position reports to the appropriate school division principal and the Superintendent of Summit Christian Academy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Student Health Services and Nursing Care

  • Provide direct nursing care, first aid, and illness response for students during the school day.
  • Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate care, parent contact, return-to-class status, or need for further medical evaluation.
  • Respond to student injuries, medical concerns, and health-related emergencies.
  • Communicate with parents or guardians regarding student illness, injury, medication needs, and other health concerns.
  • Make appropriate referrals to parents, guardians, healthcare providers, or emergency services when needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student visits, care provided, parent communication, and follow-up needs.
  • Support the school’s efforts to provide a safe, healthy, and orderly learning environment.

Medication Administration and Health Treatments

  • Administer medications and approved treatments in accordance with school policy, physician instructions, parent authorization, and applicable law.
  • Maintain secure storage of medications and medical supplies.
  • Document medication administration, treatments, and health-related services accurately and consistently.
  • Monitor medication authorizations, expiration dates, dosage instructions, and required documentation.
  • Communicate with parents regarding missing forms, medication concerns, refills, or changes in student health needs.
  • Support students with chronic health conditions, allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizure plans, or other medical needs as appropriate.

Student Health Records and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
  • Review and track immunization records and other required health documentation.
  • Notify parents or guardians of missing or incomplete health records as needed.
  • Maintain records related to student medical conditions, emergency action plans, medication authorizations, and health office visits.
  • Assist with preparation of health-related reports for school administration or applicable agencies as needed.
  • Ensure student health information is handled confidentially and shared only with appropriate school personnel on a need-to-know basis.
  • Support compliance with applicable school policies, health requirements, and accreditation expectations.

Emergency Preparedness and School Safety

  • Assist school leadership with health-related emergency preparedness.
  • Maintain emergency medical information and supplies needed for student care.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies, accidents, allergic reactions, and other urgent health situations.
  • Communicate with emergency medical services when necessary.
  • Help ensure that staff are aware of relevant student medical needs and emergency response procedures.
  • Participate in safety planning, drills, or health-related training as requested.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and healthcare providers.
  • Collaborate with other school nurses across all divisions of Summit Christian Academy and Summit Early Learning Center to support consistent student care, communication, documentation, and health-related procedures.
  • Work closely with office staff, school administrators, and other school nurses to support daily student health needs.
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with parents regarding health concerns, documentation, and follow-up needs.
  • Represent Summit Christian Academy in a manner consistent with the school’s mission, Biblical values, and commitment to Christian education.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Assist with other health-office, student-support, or school-related responsibilities as assigned.

Office Support and School Event Attendance

  • Provide health-related support for school events as requested by the division principal, Superintendent, or school administration.
  • Assist with health needs related to field trips, special events, student activities, and campus programs.
  • Provide general support to the school office during periods of urgent need, as appropriate and as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the division principal, Superintendent, or school administration.

Education, Licensure, and Certification

Current nursing license or appropriate healthcare certification required, as determined by the needs of the position. Applicants with LPN, RN, CNA, Medical Assistant, EMT, or comparable healthcare training may be considered.

Current CPR and First Aid certification required or must be obtained within a timeframe determined by the school.

The school will consider qualified applicants with varying levels of healthcare training and experience, provided they demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to respond appropriately to student health needs within the scope of their training and school policy.

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • Prior healthcare, nursing, medical office, emergency care, school health, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience working with children and families preferred.

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality with student, family, medical, and school information.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment within the scope of professional training, certification, school policy, and assigned responsibilities.
  • Be able to respond appropriately to illness, injury, emergencies, and urgent student needs.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Be able to manage multiple priorities and complete work assignments with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy, including proficiency with email, basic data entry, health records, and school-specific software.
  • Be willing and able to learn school-specific systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Exercise professionalism, compassion, initiative, and discretion.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Physical and environmental demands include, but are not limited to, walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, assisting students who are ill or injured, manual operation of office and health-room equipment, occasional lifting or assisting with movement of students or supplies, understanding speech, speaking clearly, and responding quickly to urgent health situations.

The position may involve exposure to illness, bodily fluids, medications, cleaning products, and other health-related materials typically present in a school health setting.
