Summit Christian Academy is a non-profit ministry of The Assembly of God Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. SCA provides high-quality, faith-based education to students in preschool through 12th grade. We are looking for teachers who know God and who want to discover purpose, maximize potential, and make a difference in the lives of young people.

Summit teachers are hired on a 9-month contract. As a condition of employment, all positions require satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.

Position Summary

The Secondary English Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing an appropriate instructional program for high school students that guides and encourages students to fulfill their academic potential and promote positive spiritual development.

The Secondary English Teacher establishes a classroom atmosphere in which English language arts concepts, literature, writing, grammar, communication, and critical thinking skills are taught in ways that help students learn according to their individual abilities while modeling Christian life in word and deed.

The ideal candidate will be prepared to teach literature, writing, grammar, vocabulary, research, communication, and critical thinking skills while helping students evaluate literature, language, communication, and culture through a Christ-centered worldview.

This position reports directly to the High School Principal and the Dean of Academic Development and Innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Classroom Teaching

  • Plan a variety of teaching strategies to match students’ learning styles.
  • Evaluate students creatively through a wide variety of assessments.
  • Maintain positive communication with both parents and students.
  • Plan lessons that connect biblical principles to concepts about God’s world.
  • Help students evaluate literature, language, communication, and culture through a Christ-centered worldview.
  • Perform a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain proper discipline in the classroom and on school premises to support a good learning environment.
  • Keep students, parents, and administration adequately informed of progress or deficiencies and give sufficient notice of failure.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.

Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of secondary English language arts, literature, writing, grammar, communication, and related subject areas.
  • State certification in English, Language Arts, or a related secondary content area preferred.

  • Exhibit excellent communication skills in oral and written interactions.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality with student, family, and school information.
  • Effectively handle stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism.
  • Incorporate classroom technology to enhance instruction.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with students, parents, co-workers, and administration.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Physical and environmental demands include, but are not limited to, walking, standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, manual operation of office machines, lifting and moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving up to 25 pounds, manual dexterity for operation of office or classroom equipment, possessing vision, distance vision, and depth perception, hearing and understanding speech at normal classroom levels, and speaking in audible tones to be understood clearly in normal classrooms.
